Why Google Ads can spend twice your daily budget, and when it's a real problem

Google's up-to-2x daily rule, the 30.4x monthly limit that protects you, and the four checks I'd run if a month really does go over.

The short version
  • Google Ads can spend up to twice your average daily budget on a single day. That's overdelivery, and it's normal.
  • You won't be charged more than 30.4 times your daily budget in a calendar month: $760 at $25 a day.
  • If a month does go over, check the month's total, any mid-month budget change, every campaign that's switched on, and what the busy days bought.
  • We start new hypnotherapy accounts at $25 a day and adjust once we see what a booked consult costs in that area.

For most campaigns, Google Ads is allowed to spend up to twice your average daily budget on any single day, but it won't charge you more than 30.4 times that daily budget across a calendar month. So if you set $30 a day and see $60 go out on a Tuesday, nothing is broken. Google is spending more on a busy day and will spend less on quieter ones. The number to watch is the month, not the day: at $30 a day, the most you can be charged for the month is $912.

I've run Google Ads for hypnotherapists for over 12 years, and this is a question I get asked a lot by practices that are new to ads. The rules below come from Google's own help article on overdelivery and your average daily budget. I use $ throughout, and the rules work exactly the same whether you pay in AUD, GBP, USD or CAD. If you'd rather I just looked at your numbers, you can book a call with me.

How much can Google Ads spend in one day?

On any single day, Google Ads can spend up to twice your average daily budget. Google calls this overdelivery, and it's a normal part of how the budget works, not a fault in your account.

The word that matters is "average". Your daily budget isn't a hard daily cap. It's the amount you want to spend per day on average across the month. Google treats it as a target to hit over time, and lets individual days run above or below it.

So a $25 daily budget can spend $50 on one day, $12 on the next and $30 the day after. Looked at day by day, that feels out of control. Looked at across the month, it lands where you asked it to. I'd rather you know this before your first week of ads than find it in your billing on a Monday morning.

What is the monthly limit on Google Ads spend?

Google won't charge you more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a calendar month. 30.4 is the average number of days in a month, so the monthly limit is simply your daily budget multiplied by 30.4.

Google says both limits apply to most campaigns. This is the limit that protects you. The 2x days and the quiet days balance out against it. Google's spending limits article also says that while the cost of ads served can sometimes go over the daily or monthly limit, you'll never pay more than those limits. When that happens, Google covers the difference.

Two details catch people out:

Why Google spends more on some days than others

Google spends more on days when more people are searching and less on quiet days, so it can catch the busy days without going over your monthly limit.

Searches for help with anxiety, sleep or smoking aren't spread evenly across the week. Some days more people in your area go looking for help, some days fewer. If Google stuck rigidly to $30 a day, it could run out of budget by lunchtime on a busy day and leave money unspent on a quiet one. Overdelivery lets it lean into the busy days and ease off on the quiet ones.

The honest trade-off is that a busy day isn't always a good day. More searches doesn't automatically mean more bookings. The extra spend goes on whatever people searched that day, so it's worth checking what that was. I'll show you how below.

Daily budget, most in one day, most in one month

At $25 a day, the most Google Ads can spend in one day is $50, and the most you can be charged in a calendar month is $760.

Average daily budgetMost it can spend in one day (2x)Most you can be charged in a month (30.4x)
$20$40$608
$25$50$760
$30$60$912
$50$100$1,520

These are ad spend figures only, per campaign, in whatever currency your account uses. If you're working out what Google Ads costs a practice overall, including what it takes to turn clicks into paying clients, I've covered that in what Google Ads costs for a hypnotherapist.

The easiest way to stop worrying about daily swings is to decide your monthly figure first and divide it by 30.4. If $760 a month is what you're comfortable with, set $25 a day and let the days move around.

When overspend is a real problem: 4 checks

Overspend is only a real problem if a month's charge goes over 30.4 times the daily budget, or if the extra spend isn't producing enquiries. These four checks tell you which one you're dealing with.

  1. Add up the month, not the day. Total the spend from the 1st of the month to today and compare it with your daily budget multiplied by 30.4. If it's under that, Google is working inside its own rules. Check what you were actually charged in your Google Ads billing summary, not just the cost column on the campaign, because Google covers any served cost above the limits.
  2. Check whether the budget changed mid-month. If anyone raised the budget part-way through the month, the rest of the month paces to the new budget multiplied by the calendar days left. Say a $25 budget had spent $500 by the end of the 20th of a 30-day month, then went up to $50 a day. The last 10 days now pace to $50 times 10, so the month can land around $1,000 rather than $750. The change history in Google Ads shows who changed what, and when.
  3. Count every campaign that's switched on. Each campaign has its own budget, and your account total is the sum of them. Two campaigns at $25 a day can spend up to $100 between them on a busy day. An old campaign that was never paused is an easy one to miss.
  4. Look at what the busy days bought. Open the search terms report for the days spend jumped. If those searches brought enquiries or booked consults, the extra spend did its job. If they were searches that were never going to book, the fix is better negative keywords and tighter targeting, not a lower budget.

Start with check 1. It's the quickest, and if the month is under the limit, the daily swings were Google working as designed. If all four check out and you were still charged more than 30.4 times the daily budget for the month, that's when I'd contact Google Ads support with the dates and figures.

How we set budgets for a new hypnotherapy account

We start a new hypnotherapy account at $25 a day, which caps a full month's ad spend at $760, then adjust it once the account shows what a booked consult costs in that area.

Here's what sits behind that number:

$25 a day is a starting point, not a magic number. In a busy city it can be too little to learn quickly. In a small town there may not be enough searches to spend it every day, and Google will simply spend less. For context, one practice in Newcastle, UK spent £433 on Google Ads in September 2026 and booked 8 consultations, about £54 per booked consult. Results vary by area, competition and how well consults turn into clients, so treat that as an example, not a promise.

What I'd do if your spend just doubled

Leave the budget alone, check the month's total against 30.4 times your daily budget, and look at what that day's searches were. Most of the time, nothing needs changing.

The instinct is to cut the budget straight away. I wouldn't. A lower budget makes the rest of the month pace to the lower figure, so you lose the quiet days that would have balanced the busy one out, and you end the month having spent less than you planned on the searches that book. If the searches on that day were poor, fix the searches. If they were good, that 2x day may well be where your next client came from.

If you'd like us to set the budget, watch the month and do these checks for you, see if your area is free. HypnoLeadFlo has generated over $6M in client bookings for hypnotherapists, and we only take one practice per area.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Google Ads spend double my daily budget?

Google Ads can spend up to twice your average daily budget on any single day to catch busier days. It balances this with quieter days and won't charge you more than 30.4 times your daily budget across the calendar month.

Can Google Ads go over my monthly budget?

Google won't charge you more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a calendar month. If the cost of ads served goes over that limit, Google says it covers the difference, so you don't pay more than the limit.

What does 30.4 mean in Google Ads?

30.4 is the average number of days in a month. Your monthly spending limit is your average daily budget multiplied by 30.4, so a $25 daily budget can't be charged more than $760 in a month.

What happens if I change my daily budget mid-month?

The rest of the month paces to the new daily budget multiplied by the calendar days left. Each active day can still spend up to twice the new daily budget.

Should I lower my budget after an expensive day?

Usually not. A single 2x day is Google working as designed. Check the month's total against 30.4 times your daily budget and look at what that day's searches were before changing anything.

What daily budget should a hypnotherapist start with on Google Ads?

We start new hypnotherapy accounts at $25 a day, which caps a full month at $760 in ad spend, then adjust once we can see what a booked consult costs in that area. The right figure depends on your area and how many clients your diary can take.

Do these rules work the same in pounds or Canadian dollars?

Yes. The up-to-2x daily rule and the 30.4x monthly limit work the same way in AUD, GBP, USD and CAD.
